Links 2001 Newsletter (July 11th, 2001)

Hi there!!

We've got a special treat for all the course designers out there -- a chance to participate in an open beta of the APCD. This beta will update your current version of the APCD to 1.1, and offers a slew of new features as well as improving many of the older ones. When posting this information on your Links site, please be sure to include the warning about backing up your course files first. (This is pretty common practice when using beta software.) Hope you and your readers enjoy this opportunity to put the update through its paces and provide some feedback to the developers.

In this issue:

Important:  Before using the APCD 1.1 Beta Update, backup all of your course files to a separate location to prevent possible loss of data.

To download the Beta Update, go to http://www.betaplace.com and login using Beta ID: APCDOpenBeta and Password: welcome (They are case-sensitive).  Toward the bottom of the page, there is a “You Are Enrolled In The Following Beta Programs” section.  Click Links LS 2001.  This will bring up a page with the list of changes to APCD.  Click download on the left-hand side of the page to take you to a downloads page. (You might be asked to install the Microsoft Downloads Manager, do so when prompted.)  Then download the file apcd1_1.exe, and run it to update your copy of APCD to the beta of version 1.1.

New features have been added and some old features have been improved in the 1.1 Update. They are as follows:

Terrain Painter - You no longer need to select a group of faces to employ the Terrain Painter. It will work on any terrain you run it across. It also has the ability to add verts on the fly, so elevation detail can be added anywhere as needed. If you use this new ability, Terrain Painter has a setting to simplify the modified area when you release the mouse button.

Game Cam - One of the many possible Links views is offered by the Game Cam. This window is set to render at the same settings that Links 2001 would use in 800x600.

Swap Hole - In the Course Properties dialog, you may now swap one hole with another, easily renumbering existing holes without having to completely redefine them.

Hole Preview - You may now assign Hole Preview images for your course. The images must be JPEGs formatted 298 pixels wide and 500 pixels high (298x500). Once you've formatted them correctly, click Course Properties, Custom Images. In the Hole Preview section, click Add, then browse to the Hole Preview image for the first hole. Then click Add and browse to the Hole Preview image for the second hole, and so forth. To delete a Hole Preview image, select that image in the drop-down and click Delete. Caution: The images you add into APCD are numbered 0 to 17. Therefore, to remove the Hole Preview for Hole 6, you would actually delete "holprv05." After deleting a Hole Preview, the next image you add will fill that slot. So if you add previews for holes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, then delete the preview for Hole 3, you would add the Hole Preview for Hole 3 next, and then skip to Hole 6.

Units - You may now set the Arnold Palmer Course Designer (APCD) to use metric or English units independent of the ones Windows uses. All units displayed in APCD (including Total Length, formerly called Total Yardage) are updated to use your choice of units.

Create Hole without Shapes - You may now create a hole without using any shapes to define terrain. Follow this method:
click Plan->Define Hole Path
Click Advanced Settings on the Command Panel
Click the General Settings button
Click Auto Create Only Hole Boundary Shapes for inserted terrain
Click OK
Now you can lay out the Hole Path and Hole ID Shapes without any other shapes being grouped to the hole. Creating a Hole ID/Path this way will not automatically add a Tee or Pin to your hole even if you try to insert the red Hole ID shape. Tees and Pins for a hole may only be planted inside the red Hole ID shape for that hole, and may only be planted on terrain already set to Tee Area and Green respectively.

Hole Yardage Limits have been increased as follows:
Par   Old Limit    New Limit
---     ---------         ---------
5       700             900
4       550             700
3       250             300

The ONLY way to create a hole that is longer than the old maximum is to use the new Create Hole Without Shapes mode. The minimum distances for a hole have remained unchanged.

Import USGS Data - You can now import USGS Elevation data to create a mesh. See Section D for instructions.

Planting Mode Changes - Modifications were made to Planting Mode to speed up changes to a heavily planted course. For more details, see Section E.

Fixes:
- A problem where the Topview TGA for an object was not being changed if a TGA by the same name already existed in the Object Library was fixed.

- Fixed Japanese Crash for Links 2001
  * Custom targa files are now always saved out as 32-bit targas with no additional information (certain types of targas could cause the game to crash).

  *  Terrain texture targas being loaded from a course are now converted to 32-bit targas with no additional information (if necessary), before being saved to the user lib. IMPORTANT: To utilize this fix, delete your User.lib (this removes all custom textures in APCD), then open your courses to re-import the custom textures into APCD.

- A crash when a shape was created and assigned a custom terrain type (which later got deleted without having reassigned another terrain type to the shape) was fixed.

- Physics for the terrain category "Other" were changed to match "Fairway".

- Clicking to delete the red Hole ID shape, then clicking No on the warning dialog resulted in deletion of the red Hole ID shape anyway, but without deleting the hole path, which would remain on the course with no way to remove it. This was fixed.

- A crash that occurred when trying to save to a CD-ROM or network path was fixed.

- The default zoom setting when loading a course was changed to zoom to the first hole to reduce initial render time.

- Display options were fixed so that 2D objects and crowds can be turned off independently.

- The ability to display course shapes, terrain shapes, or both was added to the "Display Options" command panel.

- A bug that would plant an object at the origin if you tried to plant it in the front, back, left, or right views (as well as off the terrain) was fixed.

- A bug that prevented using the Tape Measure in any viewport if a Top View was not open was fixed.

- Problems that would allow Custom Images that didn't meet the requirements to be imported into a course were fixed.

- Problems with the Total Yardage (now Total Distance) Indicator displaying inconsistent values were fixed.

- A bug with the forest tool that could plant multiple objects in the same location (if the Plant button was clicked in quick succession) was fixed.
