Here is some advice from Eric Loft (E Dawg)

Trouble Shots - Well, I certainly can comment on these, since my tee shots (especially in Champ mode) can get me into some interesting spots. The number 1 priority when trying to play from the junk is to minimize the damage. If you have an opening that you’re pretty sure about getting through, before you try it, take a look at what you’ll be left with if you don’t. Will you be in the same or worse position if you don’t pull it off? If the answer to that is yes, then you really should look at chipping the ball out to the fairway and trying to make par with a good approach. On the other hand, if a miss-hit will more than likely leave you an open shot, then by all means, go for it!

One of my favorite clubs for getting out of trouble is my trusty old 1 iron. Yep, you read that right, the 1 iron is a GREAT club for getting out of the junk. As long as you don’t have an uphill lie, there’s very few trees you can’t get under with a 1 iron placed all the way back in your stance. You do need to realize that this isn’t going to go all that far - maybe 175 tops if you’re playing to the fairway and have room for it to roll. But on a long par 5 where you’re in the trees off the tee, that 170 yard punch out of the junk could well give you a legitimate shot at a bird. Also, the ‘Open-10’, or snap less 1 iron can be a neat trick to pull off, especially in match play. To do this, you need to be able to 1) have room to run the ball up to the green. 2) be around 100-110 out (at around 79 mph) and 3) be able to aim around 20-30 yards left of your target. To execute the shot, aim well to the left, make your normal swing, but DO NOT snap at impact. Instead, hit it as you would a putt. The ball will come out low, hot and right, almost like a shank. If you’re in disbelief reading this, check out what this shot looks like when pulled off at David Cass’ Links Highlights page.  Or download that one shot directly from here.

Thanks Eric.
