Hmmm...,
bunkers! What can I say? They are relatively
simple greenside but from the fairway, I am
clueless. The sand snap for the PS'ers is very
tough to control. I haven't figured out the
yardages with the clubs even if you do hit sand
snap. I seem to remember a lofted 6wood where I
hit the sand snap perfect went about 165yds,
does that sound right? A perfect sand snap with
a 9 iron goes about 100yds for me. Greenside
bunkers are much easier. I do my best to avoid
the bunkers, aiming away from them as much as
possible. If I hit into a bunker, I usually chip
out or try to find a line to the flag that is
unobstructed by water, rough, trees or another
bunker (especially). Now, if I miss sand snap
and my ball comes up way short (and I do mean
way), at least my next shot will be from the
fairway. Again, take your medicine while playing
PS. Your errant drives or approaches will
penalize you as they should. Don't compound your
error by playing a very low percentage shot and
putting yourself in even deeper trouble. Par is
a good score, don't forget it.
With greenside bunkers, I get about 50 feet of
distance playing a normal LW (not chip) and
hitting a bit early on the regular snap with my
normal CHS. Now, this 50 feet is calculated
yardage, based on the slope, rise or drop to the
green and normal/medium greens. If I have a
little less for yardage, I usually just loft the
LW up a notch or two. For longer distances, say
75 feet, I would choose a SW and for 100 feet, a
PW. I have no chart for bunker shots and PS, and
so I rely on experience and feel. I'm sure there
is some formula that works. If anybody has a
good technique for consistent greenside bunker
play, please let me know.
I don't think that the snap has any affect on
ball movement left or right while playing out of
bunkers like it does from the other surfaces.
For example, you hit 3 degrees early playing
from the fairway, rough, cart path etc..., the
ball will move right to left. This isn't the
case out of the bunkers. The snap point only
determines the amount of ball or sand you hit.
Hit the same 3 degrees early out of a bunker and
you hit behind the ball and the ball will still
travel on a straight line, but the distance is
affected negatively.
Play smart golf to maximize your scoring
opportunities and also to minimize your
mistakes. One mistake only means you probably
will still have an opportunity to chip out, make
a nice approach and have a putt to save par.
Just because you make one mistake doesn't mean
you have to compound it by making another.
