PS Putting...

The Swing Meter                    Menu                    Chipping

Just like in the real world of golf and the clicking method of swinging in golf Sims, in PS, putting usually is the difference between a good player and a great one. No matter how far you hit your tee shots or how close you hit your approaches (within reason of course), you will need to be able to putt to score and to win your matches.

First off, a couple of tips on PS and putting.
You only need to click once for the putting stroke. No need to click again at the snap. It doesn't matter one bit. So, you can either click and release to initiate the back swing and then pause to drop the distance marker or click and hold to start the swing, then release to drop the distance marker. A nice feature of the PS swing meter (this is true for all the clubs in PS), if you don't like where you dropped the distance marker, you can hit the esc key and start over. The only limitation on this, is if you already started your through swing, then it's too late to hit the esc key.
I try to swing all the way to the very front of the meter on all my swings. I don't try to stop at the snap point or try to get just past the snap point. I try to swing all the way through to the very front and try to 'smack' the club head squarely into the end of the meter. This keeps me accelerating through the shot and also helps square up the club head.

Because everybody's PS swing is different, there isn't any one technique that is best. You will have to gain some experience putting to be able to see where you can improve. My suggestion would be to practice on normal/medium greens and no wind/breeze. Try to figure out how far back to swing the putter on 10, 20 and 30 foot putts. Don't worry about CHS at this point as the further back you take the putter, naturally the more CHS is generated on the through swing.

The PS putting meter is broken up into 10 foot increments with the first 10 feet further broken up into 1 foot increments. The LW Chip swing meter has the exact same markings as the PS putting meter and the ball will travel almost identical distances too. For me, I have found that for a flat 20 foot putt, I need to pull the putter back about 23/24 feet, then smooth on through to the finish. This gets me the proper CHS and distance control. Similarly, on a 30 foot putt, I need to pull back to about 35 feet. And, a 10 foot putt, about 13 feet. I do not worry about CHS while putting. I just concentrate on getting the putter to the proper distance in the back swing and swinging smoothly.

Now, even though most charts aren't effective in PS, some are very useful. The putting chart is one of them. I use my putting chart (which you can still find at my chart site), my breeze/wind chart, and Microbell's Loft chart. If you get the speed down on normal/medium greens, here is a quick calculation to get the speed of soft/slow or hard/fast greens (the other green conditions are either very much the same as normal/medium or slightly different, in that case, a very minute adjustment works very well).

  • For soft/slow greens, I calculate 135% of the distance I would normally swing back on normal/medium greens.
  • On hard/fast greens, I calculate 75% of the distance I would normally take on normal/medium greens.
  • For soft/medium and normal/slow greens, I simply add a few feet to the distance for normal/medium greens.
  • For normal/fast and hard/medium greens, I simply subtract a few feet from the distance for normal/medium greens.

A note on down hill h/f putts: Be careful using the 75% method on h/f greens as these greens have a HUGE amount of roll out. The steeper the down slope, the more the ball has a tendency to roll and roll and... well, you get the idea. As you can see, that is why I recommend you practice on normal/medium greens to get a feel for how far you have to take the putter back to get the proper distance control. Now, all there is to do is a quick calculation for the other green conditions.

There is no single factor in golf that will improve your scoring like being a good putter. If you have been a good putter using the click method of swinging, then you can look forward to being a good putter in PS too.
