Trouble Shots
Driving the golf ball in PS is very different
then driving while clicking. For starters, you
are not going to be able to control the distance
as easily as with clicking. You have to be aware
of your CHS and it will vary on you. That is one
of the reasons PS is so much fun. No longer will
you be able to just drop the aiming marker at
290 and go. Now, you will be looking at what
will happen if you only get 105 CHS instead of
the expected 115. You might even consider where
your ball will be if you get 125 CHS... You will
find yourself playing golf again and not just
hammering your drive out there 290 without any
regard for what might happen with a miss-hit.
So,
just what do you do to maximize your
opportunities for getting your tee shot in the
fairway? Well, a lot will depend on your driver
(or 3 wood even) shot patterns. If you miss your
tee shots both left and right or long and short,
then you are really going to have to just play
every shot to the fat part of the fairway or
away from the worst trouble. On the other hand,
if you just miss right (or left) all the time or
your misses are short (or long) consistently,
then you can play a little more aggressively.
There are a couple of situations that you really
must avoid. One is water. You can not score from
the water, so if you have a water hole, you had
better take into consideration a miss-hit in the
direction of the water and play your tee shot
accordingly. Another is sand. It is very hard to
get a good shot out of a fairway bunker using
PS. If you think fairway bunker shots are hard
clicking, wait until you try them PS'ing. You
will mostly find yourself just chipping out and
trying to save par with a good approach. Lastly,
trees. Just like with clickers, trees are going
to present a lot of problems for the Ps'er. Even
more so really because it is so hard to control
CHS. It is very difficult to throttle back your
CHS consistently. It is much easier while
clicking. So, trying to hit a half shot out to
the fairway from under some tree limbs is quite
challenging. You are going to find yourself just
chipping out to the fairway while Ps'ing where
you might have had a pretty good chance to get a
shot up onto the green if you had been clicking.
The 3 wood is an excellent weapon in PS. You can
get some leverage on this club like you never
could before clicking. You can hit this club
300yds w/o wind if you jump on it. So, don't
take it for granted and fall into the habit of
only pulling out the driver on the longer holes.
You are going to be looking at the placement of
your drives like never before. Sometimes, the 3
wood is going to be your best friend. This club
is easier to control as a miss-hit isn't as
penalizing as a miss-hit with the driver. There
are a lot of holes in LinksLS that do not
require a driver off the tee in order to be left
with a mid to short iron approach. Don't
automatically reach for the BIG driver on every
tee. Also, the 3 wood is going to get you
home on some par 5's that you never reached
before. Finally, an advantage for a Power
Stroker :)
The tee shot is not your scoring weapon. You
will either learn this in PS and improve or you
will continue to play the same way as you did
while clicking and get eaten alive. You just can
not bang your drive out there recklessly
anymore. Play smart and set yourself up with a
scoring opportunity by placing your tee shot in
the fairway consistently. Let your iron game and
your putting do the scoring.
