PS Chipping...

Putting                    Menu                    Driving

You will find yourself becoming a very good chipper of the golf ball in PS. The reason being, you are going to miss a lot more greens then you were used to while using the click method of playing LinksLS. That is inevitable and you will just need to adjust to it. On the positive side, the PS LW chip swing meter markings are the same as the putting meter and the ball will travel similar distances too. This simplifies chipping considerably.

The chip meter is divided in units of 10 feet just like the putting meter. The first unit (which has the yellow dashed lines) is further broken up into units of 1 foot each. The 10 foot increments have half markings too. The first of the three very large markings is the 50 foot mark, the 2nd is the 100 foot mark and the 3rd (last) is the 150 foot mark. So, for a 45 foot chip, you would pull the club back to the half mark right in front of the 50 foot mark and smoothly accelerate through the snap mark. Make sure to click at the snap mark but continue to accelerate past it to the finish. I try to 'slap' the club head squarely against the very front of the swing meter. Doing this seems to help in two ways. One, it helps keep the swing on plane as I'm trying to move the putter all the way to the end and not just to the snap point. Two, CHS is increased because I have a longer swing (back to the distance I want and then through to the very front of the meter and not just to the snap mark).

Here is a small table showing the differences I experience between the LW chip and the PW chip. Remember, compare these to each other only. Your distances will be different due to the differences between yours and my CHS while chipping. But, as long as your CHS is consistent, then these comparisons, as a percentage, should be valid for you too. I haven't noticed too much difference between fairway chips and chips out of the rough. A little less loft and maybe a touch more roll is all.

  LW
Carry/Total
PW
Carry/Total
10 9/13 11/21
20 18/26 20/38
30 25/35 32/55
40 33/44 48/75
50 43/56 52/80
75 60/70 85/120
100 84/98 115/145

The left column are the chip meter markings/distances and all calculations are in feet.

As you can see, my LW chip distances are almost perfect for the markings on the chip meter. This might not be the case with you because your CHS will not exactly match mine.

The PW chip carry averages about 125% of the LW chip (a little shorter for the shorter distances and a little longer for the longer distances). The PW chip total footage averages about 145% of the LW chip total footage (again, a little less for the shorter distances and a little more for the longer distances). You should be able to use this information as a comparison to the distances you find yourself chipping with these two clubs even though your CHS will be different then mine.
